During this past Mother’s Day weekend, over 900 performers came together to celebrate the matrilineage of gospel at the 2014 McDonald’s Gospelfest, an annual music festival, talent competition and fundraiser to benefit Ronald McDonalds House Charities.
In honor of this year’s theme, “Women Who Worship,” the day-long event featured many of today’s biggest names in gospel including Grammy Award winners Erica Campbell, CeCe Winans, Cissy Houston and Shirley Caesar. The program also provided an electrifying showcase for rising stars of all colors, ages, cultures and faiths to compete in a variety of categories including Soloists, Youth Choir, Adult Choir, Praise Dance, Step, Singing Groups, Gospel Comedians, Gospel Poets and Gospel Rappers. Held at the Prudential Center in Newark, New Jersey, the 2014 McDonald’s Gospelfest drew a record-breaking crowd of 19,000. It was produced and directed by Emmy Award-winning producer A. Curtis Farrow.
Originated in 1983 under the auspices of the McDonald’s Corporation and the McDonald’s Tri-State Owner/Operator Association, McDonald’s Gospelfest has emerged as the nation’s preeminent gospel celebration; bringing joy, inspiration, encouragement and hope to millions of Americans. In recent years, the event has attracted the participation of such superstars as Aretha Franklin, Steve Harvey, Patti LaBelle and Donnie McClurkin.
