Event featured Chinese yo-yo, traditional dance and a lion dance performance
NEW YORK, NY (February 13, 2015) – For the fifth year in a row, McDonald’s and Chinatown’s P.S. 1, Alfred E. Smith Elementary School celebrated the Lunar New Year with a special cultural show for the school’s 600 children. Co-hosted by Ronald McDonald and McDonald’s employee Mike Ortiz, the event featured performances by Columbia University’s Chinese Yo-Yo Club, New York University’s Asian Fusion Dance Group and the Chinese Free Mason Athletic Club’s Lion Dance Troupe. Throughout the interactive program, the audience was taught the significance of the holiday and invited to participate in some of the on-stage demonstrations.
“The Lunar New Year is a great time to celebrate the spirit of community, which is one of McDonald’s fundamental values,” said Bruce Colley, a McDonald’s franchisee in New York City’s Chinatown. “We are proud to partner once again with P.S. 1 to bring a fantastic cultural show to its students.”
In celebration of the Year of Goat, McDonald’s will also be participating in various Lunar New Year activities across the region, which includes the upcoming Chinatown New Year Firecracker Ceremony, the Chinatown Lunar New Year Parade and the Flushing Lunar New Year Parade. These activities kick off another year of continued outreach to the New York Tri-State Asian American community which includes the annual Ronald McDonald House Charities® / ASIA Scholarship Program, which is the largest scholarship program offered to Asian high school students residing in the New York Tri-State area.
